Interview: Sam Calver

Who are your major musical influences?

I was brought up on a lot of Blues and soul music i think that plays a big part in my vocal style.

Name the top three artists you loved growing up?

Ah thats a tricky one, first that come to mind are Gary Moore, Linking Park and Rage Against The Machine.

Where was your first ever performance and how did it go?

My first performance was in a school assembly singing Wonderwall i think?

What are your favourite and least favourite venues?

I love Brixton Academy, i’ve been going there since I was a kid so have good memories. The layout and vibe is just awesome!
Least favourite venue? I won’t say just incase i have to play there again! ha!

Could you briefly describe your music-making process and rituals?

Writing music for me always starts with the chords and then i’ll just start rambling random words and humming to get a melody i like. Then i’ll try and fit words to it, i usually try and have a concept or title to start with. My notes on my iPhone is full of random concepts and titles.

If you could pick one artist to collaborate with, who would it be?

I would love to collaborate with Adele, her tone is just insane.

What is your guilty pleasure track? (embarrassing or not)

I can’t think off the top of my head, probably something super cheese like backstreet boys or something lol Amazingly written songs but probably not the coolest!

If you didn’t become a musician, where would you be right now?

No idea, I love the Sea so probably living abroad somewhere working on the beach. Sams beach bar 😉 or a chef, i love cooking.

Drink of choice?

Beer or Bourbon for me.

What has been the definitive highlight of your career so far?

Headlining my own sold out show in my hometown at The De La Warr Pavillion, big moment for me.

How do you spend your free time when you’re not in the studio?

Chilling with family and friends, these days I’m definitely more of a out for dinner and wine kind of guy than out out!

Any upcoming gigs?

We are currently putting some dates together for shows so keep your eyes out for them very soon!

What’s a film or tv series that you can watch over and over?

I love Game Of Thrones, Avatar is one of my favs too seen that so many times!

What’s the weirdest or funniest question you’ve been asked in an interview?

I recently got asked “when does a cushion become a pillow”? Everyone I’ve asked this to had a different answer but i think its when you put your head on it right?

How has your music evolved since you first started making music?

Loads! Ive always been in to so many different types of music that my own stye has gone through a lot of phases until i found my own sound. Ive done acoustic, EDM, Hip hop and rock but now i guess mixed them all together 😀

What advice do you have for up and coming musicians?

Believe in yourself, stick at it and write as many songs as you can.

‘Don’t Tell Me You Love Me’ is out now on Island Records
